Look with your eyes and your fingers.
It’s difficult to decide which is more impressive: the fact that Nokia has announced another touchscreen phone so soon after the 5800 XpressMusic or that it managed to keep the N97 secret from the whole entire internet before launch.
Ah, just push it
The N97 is about more than just touch though – slide back the screen and you’ll find a full Qwerty keyboard nestling underneath so you don’t need to worry aboit fat fingered on screen mistypes a la iPhone.
Nokia is also touting the N97 as The Phone for the well connected social networker – it’s even attempted to coin a rubbish phrase to describe its GPS enabled networking capabilities: So-Lo. Social Location, geddit? How this differs from other satnav enabled Nokias, however, is currently unclear.
Specs sells
Silly names aside, Nokia has gone all out on packing as much iPhone beating and Storm chasing hardware into the N97 to try and make it the touchphone of choice.
Storage, for example, starts at a whopping 32GB – but if that’s not enough then you can plop in another 16GB thanks to the microSD card slot, bumping it up to a might 48GB.
Its camera may only run to a now middle of the road 5-megapixels, but that’s still more than its closest rivals can offer. It’s also packed to the gills with wireless tech so you get both Wi-Fi and HSDPA for super fast data on the go.
Add in stamina that would make even Sting jealous – it can keep going for up to a day and half playing music – and it’s a pretty nifty looking handset.

Availability
Before you get too exited and start reaching for the credit card, the bad news is that the N97 won’t be in the shops until the first half of 2009 – which could feasibly be as late as June. It’ll cost €550 – around £460 – but you’ll no doubt see that whittled away to almost nothing once the networks have put together their deals to entice you.

Guess which Nokia mobile game gets an update? The title of this post says it all I am sure so yes it is Quake!!
This new version of the famous mobile game Quake, is called Quake III Arena and this is going to be one hell of an experience when you play it. Detailed 3D graphics, adventurous episodes, brutal enemies and advanced weaponry are not the only things this fantastic Nokia 3rd edition mobile game has to offer. Quake 3 Arena takes it a step further by introducing bluetooth multiplayer smartphones gaming for all the latest 3rd edition Series 60 Nokia smartphones.
Make no mistake that this version of Quake will take a hell lot of space to install and will offer you with amazing gaming time all over again. The PAK files are around 450 megabytes alone! The gameplay is quite superb and you will not be disappointed I tell ya because the overall first person shoot em up experience is really different than any other games which is the key feature of this game. Quake 3 Arena Mobile is a symbian game with the power of an Open GL platform running its engine. A few days back Quake 3 Arena was ported to the iPhone and Windows Mobile PDA platforms and it was quite expected that Nokia Symbian phones are next on the line! Quake 3 Arena is by far the biggest mobile game ever made and on contrary to its size the game is amazingly fast and responsive to every movement.
You can opt to choose the default keyboard through the number keys on your phone or simply attach a bluetooth keyboard and play the game! With bluetooth attached you can challenge your friends on a fight or simply team up to destroy the enemies together. The blood of the enemies when they are being shot at or dying are the same you would experience on the laptop when you play Quake 3 Arena on it. All in all this game is really one of the best if not the best first person shooter games out there in the planet and you would not have expected any less even if you are playing it on your Nokia symbian phones.

Here is a nice list of themes and a game, all in the christmas spirit.
If anyone wants to add anything, feel free, but it must be christmassy!
*Note* as some of the themes are rather old, certificates may have expired. So you may have to put the date on the phone back a year, possibly 2 when installing. Don’t forget to change it back when done!
First is a christmas tree theme, with custom icons. Apologies, but no default icon version available.

Another with nice icons.

Heres a very traditional santa theme. Same icon set as above theme.

And a few others, but there is already too many images in this post.

The E65 have been updated to 4.0633.74.00. This update brings improvements for WiFi enhancements and a few other things. Before updating the firmware you need to use this tips.
Change Log of v4.0633.74.00
Security
- Improvements to platform security
VOIP
- Interoperability improvements with Avaya server
WLAN
- Improvements to EAP-PEAP settings
- Improvements to roaming
Other Updates
- Operator name database updated
- Operator settings database updated

The E70 has lots to recommend it, from the quite useable QWERTY thumb keyboard and switchable
portrait/landscape screen to the very latest Symbian OS and Series 60 versions, and with multimedia and Office functionality thrown in by the bucketload.
Get up to date!
Hopefully this won’t apply to you, but if your E70 is quite an early model, check its firmware (*#0000# on the standby screen) - if the top number starts with ‘1.’ something, then you’ve got a very old version of the internal software and need to upgrade it. Do the usual full sync and backup of anything important on the internal disk and then pay a visit to Nokia Software Updater, which will bring your firmware up to ‘2.’ something and bring a faster and more efficient device. Really.
Ignore those ‘Exit’ buttons! Usually…
You can have many of your Series 60 apps running at the same time, which means no delays while applications are launched/switched to, with the usual trick being to ignore the ‘Exit’ buttons. When you need to switch to a different application, press the Menu (’Applications’) button and select it from there, leaving the current app running.
However: don’t do this for Camera or Web or games or Java programs or sat-nav suites, any of which can hog RAM and cause your other main programs to close down. In other words, DO use Exit for these specific programs to make sure memory is freed up.
Open up your device
By default, the E70 and other modern Series 60 smartphones come ‘locked down’ in terms of the applications they’ll accept, installing only those that have large companies behind them, able to afford the expensive ‘Symbian Signing’ process. But there are hundreds of other great applications, many of them free, that are ‘untrusted’ (although under S60 3rd Edition, untrusted applications are slightly restricted in what they can do). Don’t worry about this (see my malware article to put your mind at rest). Just go to ‘Tools | App manager | Options | Settings’ and set ‘Software installation’ to “All”. and ‘Online certif check’ to “Off”. You can now install any compatible program without being blocked by a spurious security warning!
Use those shortcuts!
As befits a communicator with a proper keyboard (in landscape mode), Nokia have outfitted the E70 with lots of shortcuts. Here are a few of my favourites: In any text-entry application, Ctrl-C copies highlighted text, Ctrl-X cuts it and Ctrl-V pastes it, just as in any desktop application. Ctrl-left/right moves the cursor back/forwards a word, Ctrl-up/down moves back/forwards a paragraph.
With keypad closed again now, in Gallery/Images, ‘3′ rotates images, ‘*’ toggles full-screen on/off, while ‘5′ zooms in and ‘0′ zooms out.
In Gallery/Video clips, ‘2′ toggles full-screen playback and navigator-up fast forwards within a clip.
In Calendar, ‘#’ moves you immediately to the current day, while ‘*’ toggles between the different views.
Pump up the brightness
Make sure you increase the screen from the default brightness to its maximum. Yes, there’s a hit on the time between battery recharges, but in the meantime you’ll see some glorious colours. Go to ‘Tools | Settings | Phone | Display | Light sensor’ and adjust away. Of course, for night-time use, your smartphone can double as an emergency torch or, if you’re actually reading from the screen, you can use the same setting to turn the brightness right down to save being dazzled.

For the first time ever there is a dedicated application to better communicate with your friends in Facebook. It is called Facebook for mobile or FBook and with this amazing free application you can not only change status or post on the wall but you can update and upload new pictures, share them on the go with your friends or groups in Facebook or simply add them to your photo album in facebook. Beside these you also have the option to send international or national SMS or picture MMS to your friends within the community and outside straight from your mobile handsets. The sms will go through the internet gateway and will not result in massive regular bills from your operator but only the regular internet data packet usage charge. How cool is that?
This application is developed under the Mess Mo community and as a community user you also have the option to send multiple types of e-mails with virtually any kind attachments including videos, audios, pictures and zip files. If you subscribe to my RSS feed via e-mail then you can get the emails delivered straight to your mobile phone without any fuss! Simple! Fbook or MessMo also features another amazing feature, broadcasting or friendcasting whatever you choose to call it. With this feature you can create your own unique channel and invite friends and then gossip around countless hours without the need for any kind of third party. You can choose to send group SMS and those who are not registered… well simply send them an invite without any cost and they wil automatically receive a SMS to download this application, join in your feed or broadcast. You also have the freedom to choose several sub-channels under your channels and mark them as for example, colleagues, friends, families and anything else you want to. With broadcasting everyone gets the latest buzz in real time without any “network jams”.

Anyway, let us come back to Facebook again cause at times I am a facebook addict. The usage of internet data is honestly minimal and you will not automatically sign out because of a time out issue which is a regular story for people using the opera mini or wap browser. The wap browser obviously gives you much less functionality to Facebook. You can’t virtually do anything else but change your status or just post in a wall of a friend. That sucks! But with FBook you will be able to post winks, do actions such as slaps and splats, share a drink or post on your friends wall with images or videos straight from your smartphones or handhelds. This application is pretty much lightweight and based on java, hence it usually never crashes in the background when you are receiving a phone call or working with another application or even playing a good game such as Sky Force.
This all ine one application is compatible with all the major 3rd edition S60 and S40 N-Series and E-Series phones of Nokia including Nokia N96, N95, N91, N92, N93, 6555, 5300, 5310, 5200, 5210, 5700, Xpress Music 5710, 5500, 6120, 6121, 6220, 6300, 6600 Slide, Arte, Prism, 6110 Navigator, 3250, E50, E51, E60, E61, E62, E65, E66, E70, E71, E90, N73, N80, N81, N82, 6290, N78, N76, N75, N71 etc. Like all others, it is compatible with AT&T Wireless, T-Mobile, Vodacom, Vodafone, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Orange Mobile Uk, Virgin Mobile, Hutch, Telenor, Airtel, Orascom etc. Please do not forget to subscribe to the RSS Feed before downloading this application free. Godspeed peeps!

This post will be all about the enhancements and software customizations I have seen on the E66. Pretty neat improvements and new features added…
General Feature Enhancements
- Automatic Screen Rotation, depending on how the phone is held. A pleasing fading transition takes place when the display orientation is changed. This is a nice feat when viewing pictures or browsing the web.
- Power-saving feature where the screen goes completely blank, as if the phone is turned off, after a period of time. Holding down the dpad will show the current date and profile, and a large time display (white on black, with back light) until the dpad is released. Way better to check the time than my N82’s hard-to-read power saver.
- Notification light, where a blinking light surrounds the center of the dpad when you have unread messages or missed calls. This feature can be turned off if preferred.
- Breathing light, where a soft fading light surrounds the dpad for every 10 seconds (as if the phone is breathing) when left unused for a period of time. Adds an elegant touch, and looks good at night. This feature also can be turned off to save some battery life.
- Flip to silence alert sounds through the aid of the built-in accelerometer. But eh? Makes no sense. Why not just press the ‘Stop’ or ‘Cancel’ button, you ask. Yes, I actually thought the same. But I find this feature useful every morning, when the phone alarms to wake me up ;-). Too sleepy that I am, it’s way easier to just grab the phone and flip it to silence the alarm, instead of using my fingers to feel and press the correct button. Flipping automatically snoozes the alarm unlike stopping it if I accidentally pressed the wrong key.
- Full Screen web browsing both in portrait and landscape mode is possible.
- 2-step scrolling acceleration. Only 1-step on the N82 which is a pain on loooong lists.
- Remote Lock feature, as the name implies, allows the user to lock the device remotely. If turned on, the user should set a lock message (at least 5 characters, case sensitive) . In case of loss, the user can lock the device by sending the defined message to it. If remote locking is successful, a confirmation message will be received by the sender, stating that the phone and memory card has been locked.
Stand-by / Home Screen
There are two different home screens that the user can personalize: Business mode which you can choose to set up with shortcuts for work-related emails, calendar entries and applications; and Personal mode for personal email account, music and other applications enjoyed during free time. The handset’s theme and wallpaper automatically changes depending on the selected mode. Such a nifty feature I would love to have on my N82.
And I was surprised when I learned that the user can now modify which shortcut bars will be displayed on the home screen! So if you are like me, you can opt to remove the Search bar and WiFi Scanning options from the standby. Or if you prefer, only meeting entries or to-do notes are displayed on the screen. Arghh.., I wish this would also be built-in on the N82.
Another gem here is the notification icons for missed calls, new messages and new voice mails. A pop-up menu is displayed when you highlight an icon where you are given more options. To find out more about this, check this video-look made by Mike for the E71 which also features this amazing home-screen.
